Terrible Towel…Great Bet!

Myron Cope

Myron Cope spoke in a language and with a voice never before heard in a broadcast booth, yet a loving Pittsburgh understood him perfectly during an unprecedented 35 years as a Steelers announcer.

Cope, a writer by trade and an announcer by accident whose colorful catch phrases and twirling Terrible Towel became nationally known symbols of the Steelers, died Wednesday at age 79. Cope’s tenure from 1970-2004 as the color analyst on the Steelers’ radio network is the longest in NFL history for a broadcaster with a single team and led to his induction into the National Radio Hall of Fame in 2005. Cope was best known beyond the city’s three rivers for the yellow cloth twirled by fans as a good luck charm at Steelers games since the mid-1970s. He is the creator of the TERRIBLE TOWEL…how bad ass is that!

Former players and coaches were amazed when they would travel at the amount of attention from fans that Cope would get, he would need security guards at every hotel when he traveled with the team. A little coincidence that I found very odd was that when the Steelers played there first ever game at Three Rivers, it was also the first game for a pair of rookies…Myron Cope and Terry Bradshaw at QB…there first game together was on September 20,1970.

One thing that I find showed great respect to this man was when he retired, the Steelers respected him so much that they did not even try to find a replacement for him, they simply went from a 3 man booth to a 2 man booth. That is RESPECT for a great man and well deserved of course! Myron Cope was a great announcer and an even better person. His legacy will live on forever and NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!
