Houston Astros owner Drayton McLane will honor Roger Clemens’ 10-year personal services contract despite an FBI decision to investigate whether the star pitcher lied under oath about his denials of steroid use.
McLane said Friday that reports he was reconsidering Clemens’ contract because of his legal issues were “overstated.” Clemens’ contract kicks in after he officially retires. He’s been throwing batting practice to minor leaguers at spring training since Wednesday, but McLane said Clemens is doing it voluntarily and is not getting paid.
On Thursday, the FBI took over the Clemens case after Congress asked the Justice Department to look into Clemens’ testimony at a Feb. 5 deposition and a Feb. 13 hearing. Clemens could face perjury charges. This is the best possible thing for Clemens right now, I think! The Astro’s are staying with there man…To be honest I think that they are doing this is because they respect Roger and dont want to look like cowards and back out just because of all the media attention it will bring.
Hopefully Clemens will retire very soon and begin this thing with the Astro’s because there is no way that he can come back and play without getting ripped apart in every stadium he plays in. Why would he want to put himself in that situation for the entire season. Roger do us all a favor and take a step back and focus on your perjury charges!
